Fool's Gold
A Movie Review

It's 1:53 Long

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
I suppose I’ll leave my deep and insightful analysis for "Fool’s Gold" for the end of this review so let’s just get to the story, which, if you saw the trailer, is really all you need. But here goes anyway…

Finn (Matthew McConaughey) is on a quest to find a sunken treasure, a quest he is originally on with his wife, Tess (Kate Hudson), that is until she can’t take his treasure-quest ways anymore and divorces him. The divorce comes just after Finn is destined to be fish food after upsetting his latest financier, Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart). Now apart, Tess is working as the Steward on the yacht of Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), he who is not-so-eagerly awaiting a visit from his dumber-than-a-box-of-rocks daughter, Gemma (Alexis Dziena). Finn, of course, is in need of a new person fronting the money for his quest, and who better than an old, rich dude on a yacht, with a hot daughter, and suddenly finding out Tess works for Nigel works in his favor as he can, with Tess’ help, explain that he has found the treasure.

Sure enough, Nigel buys their story, points his yacht in the direction of the sunken treasure, sort of hoping for some quality time with his dimwit daughter who, rather than hang out with her friends in the Yucatan is now intrigued with thoughts of pretty jewels and Finn’s buff body. So they’re off, only to find that Moe (Ray Winstone), Finn’s original mentor, is also looking for the treasure, and now it’s a race to find it and keep Bigg Bunny at bay. Oh yea, Finn and Tess also realize they still love each other.

If you are looking for a movie that gives you exactly what the trailer shows, "Fool’s Gold" is that movie, but for me it could have been much more. For me the problem was it seemed they didn’t know if they wanted to make a romantic comedy or a romantic adventure. The romantic part was easy enough to accomplish with McConaughey and Hudson, both good enough in their roles for the dudettes to lust for Matthew while the dudes could drool over both Kate Hudson and Alexis Dziena, but the movie couldn’t decide to stick with a straight adventure movie, or a comedy, with the deciding factor in this being the stupidness of the Bigg Bunny character. He’s a supposed rapper-dude who might be a killer and owns an island, who has two bumbling dopes for bodyguard/muscle, and then suddenly we get a grislier bodyguard/muscle dude in the mix. They are supposed to be the comic element, I guess, but they were too over-the-top dumb for me.

Personally, turn the movie into a slapstick adventure about looking for a sunken treasure with an entire cast of bumbling fools, or seriousness it up with a more ruthless acting bad guy with Finn able to escape because he is lucky/creative, rather than knowing the bumbling oafs would screw things up again and again, more like an "Indiana Jones" type of movie, if Indiana had a hot ex-wife along for the ride.

I wanted to like "Fool’s Gold" a little more, maybe because I had a higher expectation for it, but for being exactly something you can expect, it’s 3 stars out of 5. Finishing up, though, I will say this – That Alexis Dziena is either the ditziest actress being able to play herself, or one of the most talented actresses ever because her portrayal as the dumb/bimbo/spoiled brat was fantastic (I really hope it’s the latter).  Too bad the movie is rated PG-13, though, because it would have been nice to see her naked.  God, I'm such a pig sometimes.

That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
