Just the other day I was saying to myself, “Self, whatever happened to George Wendt? You know, Norm from Cheers?” Sure, I could have Googled him, but it turns out I didn’t have to as it turns out Mr. Wendt was part of the cast for the horror flick, “Bliss.” I was excited to see where he fit in. As the movie is a horror film, I wish I could say things ended up well for “Norm,” I mean “Pops.”
Anywho, “Bliss” gives us Dezzy (Dora Madison). She is your basic starving artist, late on her rent, dropped by her agent, and fears she may have lost her painting mojo. Yup, she has painter’s block, and she likes to say every variation of “fuck” a lot.
What to do? Why go out for some drug-fueled partying, of course?
What should you have? Why, Bliss, of course?
Yup, Dezzy ends up with some Bliss up her nose, booze on her lips, and sex, and things start to get out of hand as there is more Bliss, more booze, and more sex.
The bad thing? Well, the blacking out and waking up with memories of blood.
The good thing? Dezzy is getting her creative side back, even if she doesn’t remember doing any of the painting.
Of course Dezzy is now getting completely hooked no Bliss, the nights of debauchery keep getting more and more whacked out, but dammit, her painting is turning into the masterpiece she wants it to be!
After waking up one too many times naked and covered in blood, Dezzy begins to realize there is some vampire stuff kind of going on, or at least a thirst for blood, and she wants to get to the bottom of it, but as she is told, “This isn’t dope, this isn’t booze, this is Bliss. You don’t give it up.”
Some of the people you feel bad for, like Pops, especially when Dezzy goes completely bonkers, but others, well, she warns them to leave, they don’t, so they become a part of her bloody inspiration. I mean, really, at the end, even during her Bliss-fueled massacres, all Dezzy wants to do is finish her painting.
As much as I didn’t want to like “Bliss,” mostly because the script early on was just a bunch of f-this and f-that, the darn thing grew on me. The turn came as Dezzy started to shift from the “woe is me” starving artist to the drug-fiend vampire girl. It wasn’t like a creepy horror film, you pretty much could guess who was going to get bitten and eaten next, but the look of the film just kept getting better and better as it went along, the blood started splattering, and the mix of metal music completely added to the mayhem.
Looking for a big-budget horror film? “Bliss” ain’t it, but if you want a film that, once it kicks into bloody gear, doesn’t stop, “Bliss” will satisfy your thirst for blood and craziness on the screen. It’s 4 stars out of 5 for “Bliss.”
That’s it for this one!! L8R!!!
