Some “Saturday Night Live” actors can make the stretch to big-screen movies, and some can’t, and this movie has Chris Kattan as Corky Romano. Corky is a brother in a mafia family recruited to save his family by posing as an FBI agent. The movie looks stupid, Kattan looks to be playing the dorky dude like he sometimes plays on SNL, and this looks like one of those “Isn’t there something better playing” movies. It will depend on the weekend if I will see this, it just looks dumb. Then again, sometimes I’m all for dumb.

This one almost seems like an “Armageddon” except the trip isn’t to an asteroid, this one is to the center of the earth. Hmm?

The story goes that the United States developed a super-weapon that could create a mysterious earthquake anywhere on earth. This was great for taking out the enemy, but in doing so it stopped the core of the earth from spinning (who knew it spun in the first place?). So what happens when the earth’s core stops spinning? Well, it seems that now the atmosphere gets all messed up, radiation or something can now get through, and “super storms” start appearing everywhere, destroying everything in their path. So what are we to do? Well duh, we’ve got to start the earth’s core spinning again. How? We build a crazy drilling contraption that will drill down to the core, leave some nuclear explosives, and just like that the earth will be saved.

Now I know the story sounds kinda stupid, but the movie does look like it has a little bit of promise, action, suspense, and a hot-looking Hilary Swank to its credit. I can almost bet someone doesn’t make it back from the trip to the core, but they’ll always be remembered as someone who saved life on earth.

Just the other day I was saying to myself, “Self, whatever happened to David Duchovny?” Then I saw the trailer for “Connie and Carla” and low and behold, there he is.

Well, Nia Vardalos did pretty well with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” so now comes round two. She and Toni Collette play Connie and Carla. They’re lounge singers where no one appreciates them. Then they witness a mob killing so they head out of town deciding that Los Angeles would be a low-key kind of place to hide out. They end up finding work singing for a dinner theater, only they are posing as drag queens, which is where it looks like most of the jokes are coming from, women playing drag queens. Connie’s problem is that she meets Jeff (Duchovny), likes him, only she’s posing as a drag queen so she can’t make a move on him. Hilarity ensues.

Nia showed she has her finger on the pulse of the nation with the Wedding movie, which she wrote, so we’ll she if she’s still pulsing because she wrote this movie as well. This looks like another hit because I think every woman in America will drag their hubbies to this just like they did with Greek Wedding.

College Road Trip
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Martin Lawrence, Raven-Symone
MPAA Rated: G

Release Date: 2008

This seems like kind of a weird movie for Disney to take on, especially with the story being about a high school girl checking out colleges she wants to go to, but what the hell. For the movie we get Melanie (Raven-Symone) as the high school girl. Originally the plan was to visit the colleges with her friends, but dad is a police dude (played by Martin Lawrence), and the last thing a high school girl wants is her overprotective dad around when she’s trying to impress the college dudes. And then, of course, hilarity is supposed to ensue.

The trailer shows a movie really being marketed to the tween girls, and I suppose even though the material is about the end of high school, who can’t relate to a movie about not wanting your parents around, and then, of course, realizing you really love them.

Ahh, another movie portraying fraternities and sororities in a crappy light. It’s such an easy premise, but hard to promote as groundbreaking, so for this movie we get some high school kids looking for a diversion from the high school boredom, and they end up pledging a fraternity on a weekend trip (to get into the parties of course) where gross stuff ensues. Of course our high schoolers try to pretend they are in college so they can also hook up with some college girls, and of course they are dorks who will somehow rise to the top and show that the “cool” fraternity dudes are actually scum, or something like that.

High schoolers going to college is sometimes a funny premise, but this movie seems kind of like the same old thing. Doesn’t matter, though, for me, because the movie is rated R which hopefully means important college movie themes will be present, or at least a couple, namely boobs. This one almost looks perfect for me as King of The Land of the Easily Amused. If you are a member of my kingdom, it might be perfect for you, too.

Look, I’m not going to waste your time with the preview because the trailer looked pretty bad, but coming into the new year, maybe what you need is a mindless comedy to get you back to facing the real world.

We’ll see how my weekend goes if I catch this one!

Zack (Jesse Bradford) finds a watch that makes time stand virtually still around him. He starts having fun with the watch, watchiing, and chasing the girl, but now the bad guys want the watch and they’ll stop at nothing to get it. Now Zack has to also be a crime-fighter. Such is the life of a teenager.

This actually looks like it could be a fun movie if you suspend belief in a little bit of reality. What I wonder about, though, it the PG rating. That kind of turns this movie into something like “Spy Kids.” I’m not saying that’s bad, in fact Nickelodeon is involved, so this could actually be a fun movie to take the kids to. I might catch a matinee, or maybe I should catch a late-night showing when the kids are at home? We’ll see.

Russell Crowe stars in this movie as boxer Jim Braddock, he’s a real dude, and this movie comes across as kind of a “Seabiscuit” except with a boxer.

Pretty much Jim Braddock was a boxer who was really good, then failed a bit, and then as the depression hit and people were looking for any story of anyone, or anything, who was the underdog fighting their way back, he came along as their vision of hope.

This one looks emotional, has the fabulous Paul Giamatti who has really shown he is the actor to compete with, and has potential to be one of those movies the Academy Award people will forget because it’s in the middle of the year and not in December, sadly.

I hope to catch this one as I always like a good underdog story, and this has the makings, especially with the likes of Ron Howard directing, to be a great movie.

Directed By: David Twohy

You know, I never saw the movie “Pitch Black” a few years ago, and because of that I didn’t even realize Vin Diesel was associated with that movie, and as I watched the trailer again I wondered about this movie.

The synopsis kinda goes that Riddick (Vin) has been on the run for the past few years as people try to hunt him down because there’s a bounty on his head. In the meantime, there’s this Lord Marshal dude (Colm Feore), who pretty much captures humans with these things called Necromongers. Well, Riddick gets captured, hooks up with some chick, and finds himself fighting Lord Marshal and his Necromongers, and because of this it’s up to him to save the planet he’s on.

Okay, so the story is as strange as any other trying to save another planet from evil people, but this one’s got Vin so you can pretty much assume the action gets kicked up a couple of notches. As Dwayne Johnson (that’s The Rock if you didn’t know) and Vin fight for bragging rights for action bad-ass, I think Dwayne’s got an edge with him in “Walking Tall,” but Vin is fun in his own right, so I plan on catching this movie even if I’m not really sure what it’s about.

I’m pretty sure I have never read anything by C.S. Lewis, let alone recalling him as a classic, but supposedly he is an acclaimed author, and this movie, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” is based on his classic novel. Fine. I have no idea what any of that really means, but the trailer does show a magical adventure movie about four kids sent to a weird house.

So the four kids end up in this weird house with this weird professor dude, and they are pretty bored except for playing hide-and-seek. One of them opens up this wardrobe while trying to hide, and low and behold finds this weird world where animals talk and life seems grand, although it isn’t. It seems some evil witch is keeping things perpetually cold, even winter-like, and it’s up to the kids to join together with the animals to get rid of the witch.

The movie looks good, but it’s only shot at a blockbuster is that Potter-mania has died down and the kids are ready for another adventure because “Goblet of Fire” opens a mere three weeks prior.

I can’t say I’m excited about this film, but then again, it’s not really meant for me. I does look like a good one for the kids who enjoy adventure stories and talking animals.
