Bride Wars
A Movie Review |
|
 |
Ah, a wedding day. A day of joy, excitement, fear, jealousy, drunkenness, debauchery, horny bridesmaids, bad dancing, and, oh yea, two people pledging their love to one another and deciding that they will stay together for the rest of their lives. And in the movie “Bride Wars,” it’s a day to make up with your best friend after you blind-side tackle her as she walks down the isle, even though, well, all of the problems in the story are really the fault of your husband-to-be.
So “Bride Wars” gives us Kate Hudson as Liv and Anne Hathaway as Emma. Since they were little girls they have been the best of friends, and both of them have wanted to have their wedding at The Plaza in New York City in June. How romantic! Wouldn’t you know it, they both have boyfriends, both end up engaged, and their dream of both having their weddings is about to come true because they go to visit Marion (Candice Bergen), wedding planner extraordinaire, and wouldn’t you know it also, she has three spots available at The Plaza in June, two on the same day, one a little later in the month, so things are perfect because Liv will get hitched early in the month, Emma later in the month, and they can both be each others maids of honor as well! Hip, hip, hooray! But, as we know from the trailers, there is a mix-up, their weddings get booked for the same day, and even though I’m thinking it is Marion’s obligation to ruin the hopes and dreams of the woman who ended up with the date later in June because, well, first come – first served, now we get two best friends hell-bent on ruining the special day of the other.
And so, childish prank after childish prank ensues, including sending sweets to Liv so that she’ll get too fat for her wedding dress, turning Emma’s skin into a lovely shade of burnt-orange thanks to a fake tan, and Liv getting blue hair, showing that actually the brazen bitch has the future husband who knows how to make her feel better. Ah, best friends, both adults, and acting like they are two, twelve-year-old girls fighting over the same boy.
As things go on, well, they both kind of feel bad at how things are going, the big day arrives, and it almost appears that they might make up, but we know that won’t be the case for now because the trailers show Emma storming into Liv’s ceremony, which, of course, brings the final conclusions that are telegraphed way early in the movie that I won’t give away here.
“Bride Wars” is a movie that some women will love, at least a group of women behind me in the theater loved it as I overheard them as the movie was finishing, and it might be a movie others will find just plain stupid. Guys might not get all of the subtleties of what it’s like to be a bride that the movie shows, but the movie does have a laugh or two for them as well, although sadly it’s really only about one or two laughs.
For what it’s worth, the movie is predictable as hell (my BFF saw the outcome coming from a mile away as well) and is probably best served as an afternoon getaway for your wife and her girlfriends rather than a date movie. For the dudes, it’s probably a 1 or 1 ½ star movie tops, for the dudettes it’s probably closer to 3 or 3 ½ (especially if you are travelling in a dudette pack), so I’ll average everything together, urge you men to send out your lady on a dudette night out, and give “Bride Wars” 2 stars out of 5.
That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!! |
