A Movie Review

A Review by
Stu Gotz
Wow!  This movie…  It tried so hard.  It tried to be deep, compelling, witty, profound, and emotional.  The only thing it successfully achieved in being was bad.  I could see where the screenwriter, Henry Jaglom, so desperately wanted to go, but because this movie was so poorly cast, and maybe the producers didn't raise enough cash, the only place this movie went was down.  Did I mention that the screenwriter also edited, and I think even directed this movie.  Obviously he never learned the lesson Eddie Murphy did when he wrote, starred in, produced, directed, and I think even help paint the sets of "Harlem Nights."  Sometimes screenwriters, directors, and actors shouldn't be the same person, and "Deja Vu" is more evidence of that, but then again by doling out such work I do suppose a writer's original intent can sometimes get lost.  For "Deja Vu", I really wish that by keeping things in close circle would have made this movie better, but I honestly thing it may have been better in the hands of professionals without emotional attachment.

I seriously doubt that this movie will get wide release.  It will most likely wind up in local "Fine Arts Theaters" where I think even the latte-head crowd will poo-poo this movie.  Sorry to say "Deja Vu" blows and I cannot recommend that you dish out your hard earned 8 bucks to go see it.  "Deja Vu" gets 1 of 5 stars.

I can hear you saying two things now.  One is, "Stu, you don't know shit.  'Deja Vu' was a fine film by one of the great filmmakers of all time."  Fine, you go sit through it, have fun, buy some popcorn - I'll be at home wondering how I'm going to make up the nearly two hours I lost seeing the film.  The second thing I can hear you say is something like "Stu, you said this movie really sucked, yet you gave it one star.  What's up with that?"  Well, hey…  It had nudity, besides I have seen worse, maybe not much worse, but worse nonetheless.  'Nuff said!

Oh, yea, do you want to know what it's about?  Screw you!  Sitting through it once and having to recall it to write this was enough for me.  Check out your local Big Town Paper or some artsy site on the internet - I'm sure they reviewed it, and probably liked it.  Why?  Because when I went to see the film there were these other dudes around me, one who I could swear fell asleep, and another who seemed to laugh like he couldn't believe the film was so bad.  Then I'm overhearing them later, and the dude who looked like he fell asleep said he loved the film, and the other seemed to whole-heartedly agree.  Maybe if I would have taken a nap I would have loved the film, too.

I'm Stu Gotz - 'Nuff said! (and I mean it this time!)
