The Fast and the Furious
A Movie Review

MPAA Rated - PG-13

It's 1:38 Long

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
I really expected "The Fast and the Furious" to be a totally stupid movie. I’m not saying it didn’t have its stupid points, but as far as a movie with some kick-ass car races, hot chicks, and stupid dudes, well, "The Fast and the Furious" had it all.

The story is nothing like the trailers you may have seen in the theater. For that all you saw were some cool car scenes with some hot chicks. Nope, this is a movie with an actual plot, well sort of, other than racing cars. It seems there are a group of car people who keep stealing audio equipment and the feds want to find out who they are before the truckers start packing heat (that’s guns for you who don’t talk street). So they send in a totally inexperienced, not yet detective, named Brian (Paul Walker), to infiltrate the world of the street racers. He starts by visiting the head street racing dude’s sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster) at her little store and eating tuna fish sandwiches, gets in a fight with one of the racing guys, and weasels his way into one of the street races where, in the end, he saves Dominic (Vin Diesel) from getting caught by the cops. So Brian enters the world of street racing, works on finding out who the bad guys really are, and in the end is probably the only person who doesn’t really deserve being a cop because he lets his love for Mia and his friendship for Dominic get in his way of, well, being a cop.

"The Fast and the Furious" was entertaining but it had the potential to be so much more. The entertaining part comes from the car races, the car chases, and what most teenagers always dreamed of, hot cars and hot chicks (do teenagers still dream of these things?). You wanted to know about cars, you wanted to make them faster, and you knew that if you could get that car, well, you could get the chicks. But the potential was also there for it to be a great undercover cop movie. Brian infiltrates the ranks of the car racers beautifully. He works Dominic’s sister, he fights with one of Dominic’s best friends, and he knows everything he needs to know about cars. But that’s where it ends because instead of being a cop, Brian just seems to be a guy who wants a friend and a girl, the friend being Dominic and the girl being Mia. So, for the movie’s sake, I ask you to forget about Brian being a stupid cop, I ask you to look past the story, and just take "The Fast and the Furious" for what it is – a movie with cool cars and hot chicks. The only problem in asking you to do this is you also have to do that with a PG-13 rating. Why is that a problem? I guess because I suppose the underground car racers probably swear a lot more, so do the cops (one scene looked like a Godzilla overdub) and the hot chicks didn’t get naked in the movie.

I would have liked Brian to be a real, undercover cop and not a car racer wannabe who happens to be a cop, I would have liked Dominic to be more of a bad-ass, and I would have liked for Mia to have gotten naked. Mia did get naked but you didn’t get to see it, Dominic did kick some ass but not enough, and Brian, well, why be a cop if you can’t bust the bad guys?

I’ll give "The Fast and the Furious" 3 stars out of 5. There was some real entertainment in this movie, and the chicks were hot, but this movie really needed to shoot for the "R" rating instead of PG-13 and really needed to be a movie about an undercover cop in a messed up situation rather than an undercover cop hoping to get laid and race cars. "The Fast and the Furious" had so much of the potential to be a 5 star movie that it almost makes me sad.

That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
