The Gift
A Movie Review

MPAA Rated - R

It's 1:52 Long

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
What I liked about “The Gift:” A good performance by Cate Blanchett as Annie, the dudette with the psychic abilities. They kept you guessing who the killer was until towards the end. Keanu Reeves as Donnie showed he could be an evil character. Katie Holmes gets naked.

What I didn’t like about “The Gift:” Katie Holmes naked but dead and decomposing. The ending took things to a level just over the top.

Here’s the story wrap-up. Annie lives in a small, southern town, with her three kids. Her husband was killed in a plant accident so to make ends meet she reads cards for people. Many of the town-folk see her, and she is there to listen as much as she is there to give advice. The town has its strange mix of characters, from Valerie (Hilary Swank), the abused wife, to Donnie, the husband who abuses her, to Jessica (Katie Holmes), the spoiled rich girl who is engaged to Wayne (Greg Kinnear), the school principal. There’s also Buddy (Giovanni Ribisi) who has his own mental problems which Annie tries to help him come to grips with. One day Jessica ends up missing, Wayne and Jessica’s dad enlist the help of Annie to find her, and Annie has a vision where her body is. Well, the story then turns into a murder trial and if the right man is in prison. Annie is afraid because she still feels in danger even though one of the dudes are in prison, and she knows she must figure out who really killed Jessica. I’ll just leave the story at that.

“The Gift” won’t go down as one of the best thrillers mixing the supernatural with a nice murder, but it was decent at keeping you guessing and pointing fingers saying “Well, if it wasn’t him then it must have been him, I think.” I have to admit that I did jump at one point when Annie kicked a toy truck, so the suspense thing did get to me a little, and everyone did a good job in their role. You hated Donnie for being the wife beater, you felt bad for Buddy knowing he was really messed up, you wanted to yell at Valerie and tell her to get as far away from Donnie as possible, and Jessica came off as one of those rich bitches that we’ve all run into at one time or another, and that all helped “The Gift” move along as a decent thriller. And for me all was well until the police chief revealed something to Annie that puts the ending over the top. I just wanted Buddy to get away.

And with that I’m giving “The Gift” 3 ½ Stars out of 5. The ending bugged me a little, although to each their own on that one, and Katie Holmes did get naked. “The Gift” was a decent thriller, keeps you guessing, has you on the edge of you seat, but just didn’t take me to the level of great thriller.

That’s if for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
