The Legend of Bagger Vance
A Movie Review

MPAA Rated - PG-13

It's 2:07 Long

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
Some movies touch your heart. Some movies stir angry emotions. Some movies make you laugh your ass off. Some movies are are great.  And some movies are just good. "The Legend of Bagger Vance" is just good.

The story tells the story of Rannulph Junnuh (Matt Damon). He’s a golfer, and a damn good one, until he goes off to serve in WWI. He comes back a mess, it’s time for the Great Depression, and his old girl, Adele (Charlize Theren) is about to lose her dad’s legacy, a beautiful golf resort, because everyone’s poor. She sees her only chance at saving the golf resort is if she can get some good press to attract the few rich folks that are left to her place. So she stages a golf match between the two best golfers and invites the press. But some of the town-folk are against it, especially since they want to buy her out, and insist on a local boy to go against the greats. Young Hardy (J. Michael Moncrief) knows where Junnuh is and Junnuh decides to play. The problem is that Junnuh lost his swing.

Enter Bagger Vance (Will Smith).

Bagger comes out of the dark and into Junnuh’s life to help him find his swing, or maybe more importantly for Junnah, to help him find his life again. With some of the most bizarre training and caddying, Bagger helps Junnah overcome his demons and yes, his life become all better.

The movie isn’t fabulous, but it’s a nice story with some great acting and some, as you’d expect, great cinematography, especially with Robert Redford at the helm. But this movie isn’t for all. It’s a drama, most definitely, and if you are looking for great golf action, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, well, this isn’t the movie for you. It does have cute moments, especially in the words of wisdom from Bagger, and even the golf match has its cute moments. I’m not sure what it would have taken for "The Legend of Bagger Vance" to get to the level of great movie, but it just didn’t get there. Not that that’s a bad thing, and it is worth the price of admission, but I don’t think you will come out emotionally changed or crying your eyes out. You’ll just leave the theater thinking "The Legend of Bagger Vance" was a good movie. Matt Damon puts on the usual good show, and from me, not being a big Will Smith fan, I think this is one of his best performances, maybe mostly because he never tries to go over the top, he just plays the calm, cool, and collected stranger almost perfectly.

In the end it’s 4 ½ stars out of 5. As a drama it’s a great film, as a movie it’s just good.

That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
