A Review by
The Dude on the Right
All of the signs were there to get my refund and run. First the pre-movie commercials start and there is no audio, then the audio kicks in but the trailers are out of focus, and then the movie starts with no sound. I’m in a theater full of people, I’m a little high up in the stadium seating, but no one moves. Finally I’m sick of seeing the plot lines develop with no audio so I walk down the stairs, out the door, find a snot-nosed kid, and tell him that there is no sound in theater 2. Does he believe me? No. He follows me back into the theater, sees that there is no sound, and says "Well that isn’t good?" No shit, go get it fixed!

A few too many minutes later they finally stop the film and try to fix things. Management hands out some coupons for a free small popcorn, and I’m thinking of bailing on "Monkeybone" and get my money back or at least a movie voucher. But no, I stick it out, and about ten minutes later the film roles from where it left off and an hour and a half later I wish I had gone to get my money back.

"Monkeybone" gives us Brendan Fraser as Stu. He has his woman, Julie (Bridget Fonda), wants to marry her, and has his cartoon Monkeybone. He doesn’t like being in the spotlight when Monkeybone takes off, nor does he want his character mass-marketed. In a weird twist Stu ends up in a coma and his mind goes to "Downtown" where dream characters come to life. But his dream characters have their own ideas and trick Stu into getting an "Exit Ticket" back to his body, only his cartoon character, Monkeybone, uses the ticket. Stu is left in "Downtown" jail, Monkeybone is working on banging Julie, and a sinister plot to get the world to dream bad dreams takes shape. And you know what, that’s as much as I want to get into this movie.

Fraser does his best to play a multitude of characters, and I still have a thing for Bridget Fonda, but "Monkeybone" just fails. It’s rated PG-13 but seems to want to be rated R (I wish it were) so it can’t take the jokes where they need to go yet tries to remain cute for the kids. Monkeybone isn’t a kids character, although he looks like he should be, and the story is so bizarre that the cool effects of "Downtown" are wasted. I’m done wasting my time on this movie and will just give it 1 star out of 5. I should have taken the refund and ran.

That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
