Mr. and Mrs. Smith
A Movie Review |
|
|
Sometimes all you really want is for a movie to live up
the trailer that entertained you in the theater. I’m happy
to say that for me "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" did just that. Let’s
go…
John and Jane Smith (Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie) open the
movie in the marriage therapist’s office where John doesn’t
seem to know exactly how long they have been married and
they are both embarrassed to admit that their sex life
really isn’t that great anymore. It kinda bums them both out
because their beginnings of a couple came with great
excitement and lots of sex. But things aren’t exactly what
they seem for John and Jane. It appears that they both work
as hired assassins, only for competing assassin companies.
Who knew? But for life in the John and Jane neighborhood,
everyone believes they are just working professionals, and
the thing is, each just thinks that the other is a normal,
working professional.
All of this changes on day, when they are both sent to
knock-off some dude, only to discover what the other does
when they are away from home. And so comes the dilemma,
botching the assassination, they must now confront each
other and take out their mate to make the prices on their
head go away (it seems it’s not proper etiquette in the
assassin world for husband and wife to work for competing
companies, even if the other doesn’t know their real job).
So now our story shifts from one of a couple trying to mend
their marriage, to a story of each trying to end it. The
plus for them, they realize they like trying to kill the
other, so much so that the passion flares just as they run
out of bullets. Yup, the lovebirds are back to being
lovebirds, only now there’s a price on both of their heads,
so they have to run from the bad guys.
Finally, after much chasing and thousands of rounds of
ammunition discharged, the truth comes out, and yes, they
live happily ever after, and more than happy to gloat about
their sex life once again.
Look, this movie isn’t rocket science. It’s meant to be
funny, it’s meant to be action-packed, and it’s meant to be
just a little, or maybe even a lot, unbelievable. Pitt and
Jolie do a fabulous job of showing a married couple not
excited to be married anymore, how marriage hostility can be
funny (Jane Smith, after blasting a hole in the wall, asking
John "Are you alive, baby?"), and how a couple can be drawn
back together and get excitement back in their marriage,
albeit in a wacky, assassin-type way.
I was totally entertained by this movie and think this is
probably one of the best date movies out there. She gets to
stare and ogle over Brad Pitt, the dudes get to stare and
ogle over Angelina Jolie. Look, if you are looking for a
nice drama about the struggles of marriage, go ahead and
rent "The Story of Us" or some other sappy movie like this,
and if you are looking for a realistic action film, this ain’t it either. But if you are looking for just some fun
entertainment, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" will most likely give
you a laugh. 4 ½ stars out of 5 for "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!!
