As times have changed over the last few years, there are things
people are looking for in animation films. First, they are looking
for a good story. Second, the adults are looking for some subtle
jokes that will fly way over the children’s heads, yet let the moms
and dads have a nice chuckle. Third, the animation has to be so much
better than anyone remembers Disney doing back a bunch of years ago.
The folks at Pixar started to set this standard many year ago,
starting with “Toy Story,” but many have followed well, and one of
those is the DreamWorks Animation folks, and now they are bringing
us a movie that looks pretty funny, with the animation we expect,
namely, “Over the Hedge.”
From the trailer things look simple. The rodent animals are
confused because of the giant “hedge” that has been erected, keeping
them locked in their little park but without the means to eat. Enter
a raccoon, RJ (voice of Bruce Willis), who works to convince our
little pack of varmints to head to the human world. And hilarity
ensues.
The movie looks fun, good for everyone, and there aren’t many
movie studios figuring out the new way animation movies need to be
done, but DreamWorks has been one of them. It has potential.
