Sherlock Holmes
A Movie Review |

Ahh, the tales of Sherlock Holmes, tales that have been told many times and adapted for the big screen in many ways. This time Guy Ritchie lends his Directing talents to the tale, but lucky for him he has Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to keep things together otherwise this could have been one, giant trainwreck.
Let's start with the story...
London, dreary and weary, has been frightened by the likes of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) who has been killing people left and right, but along comes Sherlock Holmes (Downey) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) to save the day, arrest the bad man, and then Dr. Watson says that the good Lord is dead after his hanging. Well, that would be a really short movie, so eventually it comes out that Lord Blackwood has "risen" from the dead, but "risen" is probably an exaggeration, especially to the scientifically minded Holmes who thinks that other things are afoot. As the story plays out we find that Lord Blackwood is a member of a secret organization that has influenced governments for years, but he also, now, is intent on taking over the world, or at least England and the United States, as we are just after the time of Civil War crisis and ripe for the taking and they are, well, England. He's developed some sort of weapon of mass destruction and it's down to the wire if Holmes can weed out the good and bad guys in this tale in order to save the day. Sherlock is also in love with Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), and she loves him, sort of, but she has a job to do, also, and that is to steal the good Lord's killing device for her own boss.

And so it is a race against time for Sherlock to put all of the pieces together, see that Lord Blackwood is really just tricking people into thinking black magic is the cause of many ills, and save the day again. And yes, he does, and it's no surprise. And, guess what? A sequel is set up, blah.
Okay, from that last sentence, you can tell I wasn't too thrilled about the ending of "Sherlock Holmes," I mean, come on, don't make the sequel set-up so obvious, but other than that I found the movie a nice, little trip to the theater, complete with some "Oh look, we have some cool CGI effects!" moments that were unnecessary but still fun. However, what really made this movie were the likes of Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr., who had great chemistry as the good Doctor and the analytical Holmes, otherwise this could have just been another movie about a dude who solves mysteries.

There isn't that much of a surprise in this version of the story, other than I guess Sherlock Holmes is buff and can kick some ass, but the story was fun, the acting was great, and for an enjoyable reason to catch a film at the theater, sure, spend a few bucks on "Sherlock Holmes," and for sure you can add it to your Netflix queue when it pops up. I would say there were a couple of spots that dragged a bit, but in the end I say it's a solid 3 stars out of 5, so grab your honey, buy some popcorn, and just sit back and enjoy.
That's it for this one! I'm The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!! |
