It's Too Long

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
"Slackers" had the potential with the basic storyline: Loser student catches three dudes cheating their way through college and threatens to get them kicked out of college unless they help him get the girl of his dreams. Simple enough, it could have been cute, funny, and your basic teen comedy. The problem develops when our loser student, Ethan (Jason Schwartzman), isn’t just a loser, he’s a stalker – a twisted stalker with a shrine to the girl of his dreams, Angela (James King), in his dorm room, and he goes around collecting strands of her hair after class, fashioning them into a hair doll. Then there are our three slackers, Dave (Devon Sawa), Jeff (Michael C. Maronna), and Sam (Jason Segal), who, quite honestly, don’t seem to have the brains to have cheated their way through college.

So, anyway, Ethan catches our trio cheating on a physics test, and does the blackmail thing. He wants Angela and makes the boys set the two of them up. The trio goes into action, getting past history on Angela (in one spot, Dave goes to Angela’s house, posing as a censes worker. Mom and Dad are both drunk in the middle of the afternoon, show Dave baby pictures, and when Dave asks for Angela’s birth certificate, social security card, passport, and other info, well, they seem more than happy to give this information to him, and while Dad is getting this info from Angela’s room, Mom tells Dave that she enjoys decorating, cooking, sucking cock, and sewing, or something like that, and then proceeds to blow Dave.), stealing her e-mail, and just basically finding out that a guy like Dave would be her ideal man.

Well, as it turns out, the trio figure out a way for Ethan to meet up with Angela, as a volunteer at a hospital, but Ethan is just a nutcase and, well, scary. Yea, Dave and Angela hook up, Ethan is pissed, splits them up, then creepily tries to be the rebound boyfriend for Angela, but now our boys look to expose Ethan.

The movie goes for cheap laughs that just aren’t funny, the people at this college might be some of the dumbest people in the world, and in the end "Slackers" just isn’t funny at all, in fact it is actually disturbing. Gross-out comedies are one thing, but you know a movie just can’t figure it out when a fart joke fails.

As the movie was moving along I figured I was going to give it maybe ½ star, or maybe James King might would have at least gotten naked and I give it one star, but the nudity in this movie was supplied by Ethan giving an old lady in the hospital a sponge bath on her boobies. That’s a negative star in my book. So, and I don’t know if I’ll ever give a rating this bad, but it –1/2 star for "Slackers." At least they cleared it up that Angela’s mom is actually her step-mom so it wasn’t so creepy that Dave got a blow-job from mom and then slept with the daughter. Alright, it’s still creepy. –1 star instead.

That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
