Enter round two of the realistic war
films. Round one was the epic
"Saving Private Ryan,"
everyone loved it, touted it for its realism, and cried. It
had Tom Hanks and Matt Damon and a bunch of other talented
actors but without the names. The Thin Red Line tells of
another battle, is rumored to be just as realistic, and
seems to have enough Hollywood stars to make it an ego-fest.
This film touts the likes of John Travolta, Sean Penn,
George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte,
and a host of others. The hope I have is that they are there
in name and cameo, and that like "Saving Private Ryan" the
real stars are the ones we haven't really heard about.
Can the director keep the blend of egos in check, will
the big-name actors be able to put their star-studedness
aside and utilize their acting talents to their peaks to
make us not stereotype them, and will "The Thin Red Line"
keep the competition for realism running into 1999. I hope
so, and think I have my Christmas day film picked out.
