Let’s see. You get unbelievable action. You get hot
chicks in skimpy outfits. You get things blowing up. You get hot
chicks in skimpy outfits. You get lots of people shooting at each
other. You get hot chicks in skimpy outfits. You get a studly action
hero taking off his shirt and flaunting his ripped body. You get hot
chicks in skimpy outfits. You get cool gadgets and guns. You get hot
chicks in skimpy outfits. And yet you get so much more. The movie is
"XXX" and you will get exactly what you expect.The basic storyline
goes like this… Vin Diesel is Xander Cage. He’s become somewhat of a
cult classic on the internet by performing incredible stunts with
other people’s vehicles. His latest escapade involved stealing a
Senator’s Corvette, jumping it off a bridge, and floating to safety
via a parachute. All the while he’s narrating into some cameras about
how the Senator doesn’t have a clue as to music, video games, and the
internet. Enter the NSA. They’ve got a problem, namely that their
agents keep getting killed trying to spy and get info on Yorgi (Marton
Csokas) and what he’s up to. So Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson)
decides to try to get some extreme sports-type people to help, people
with criminal records who are a little more expendable. Three dudes
make the initial cut, Xander eventually shows how he is the man for
the mission, and faced with the possibility of jail and not being able
to do cool stuff for the rest of his life, or being able to do cool
stuff for the rest of his life, well, Xander decides to help the
government.
So it’s off to Prague.
Initially Xander’s mission is to get some information on Yorgi and
his buddies, but when he does his job extremely well, his mission gets
turned up a few notches. What he eventually finds out is that Yorgi is
building a crazy device to send deadly gas to various cities. It’s up
to Xander to save the day, and of course save the girl, Yelena (Asia
Argento).
Do you really care about the story? I doubt it. You want to know if
stuff gets blown up, if Xander does incredible stunts to save the day
and a couple of lives, if the world is saved, if the dudettes are in
skimpy outfits, and if "XXX" is a fun movie. "XXX" is all of these.
I know why some critics won’t like "XXX." Maybe it’s because "XXX"
isn’t as sophisticated as a James Bond film, maybe because it does
have cheesy one-liners, and maybe because I don’t think Vin Diesel
will be getting any Oscar nomination anytime soon (although I think he
should), but "XXX" is a movie about having fun at the movies. Come on,
Xander escapes one time using a serving tray to slide down some
railings. What’s not fun about that?
You already have an idea about what to expect at "XXX" so that
should dictate whether or not you spend your bucks on the movie. Me, I
loved every cheesy minute of "XXX" and give the movie 4 ½ stars out of
5. If Vin Diesel kicking lots of ass isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll
probably give it zero stars. Do yourself a favor and stay home so the
likes of us can enjoy.
